Neighbourhood Watch

OUT ON THE STREETS

Always walk facing oncoming traffic.

Carry handbag with strap on the side of the body and over the shoulder, away from the carriageway,

Never carry wallets in back pockets, always place them in the inside jacket pocket. If no jacket, remove money from wallet and place in front trouser pocket.

Never carry your house keys and something with your name and address on, in the same place. Keep your keys in your hand or pocket. If your bag is snatched you do not give them the opportunity to break into your house as well.

Don't take short cuts through dark alleyways or across waste ground.

If you are out late, get a taxi home from a company you know. Book in advance and make a note of the company and the time you booked it for. When booking for immediate service ask for the driver's name.

If you think someone is following you, check by crossing the road to see if they follow you. If they do, run to the nearest safe place where there are people and call the Police.

Self defence classes may help you feel safer, but remember unless you are an expert, avoidance is the preferred option.

INDECENT EXPOSURE (FLASHING)

It is an offence for a male to indecently expose himself to a female.

Although some females do expose themselves it is more common for a male to carry out this act.

If it happens to you, do not show any signs of shock, this is the way they want you to react. Remove yourself from the scene and always report it to the Police. If it happens to you it could happen to someone else or even to a child. Try and get a good description of the person and what they are wearing.

BEGGING

It is an offence for any person to beg for money.

Do not feel pressurised into handing over money. Be assertive, say "No"

If abuse is returned do not confront.
