December / January 1998

This is a well established technique which is applied to all rural areas in the United Kingdom providing the most cost effective way of maintaining the optimum supply security. Approximately 50% of the faults that affect an overhead line are transient in nature and most customers agree that a momentary failure of supply is preferable to a permanent interruption although business customers with computer equipment will certainly disagree! Our advice is to backup data frequently or invest in an uninterruptable power supply for time to save vital data following a supply failure.

Another safe and successful Bonfire and Firework Display was enjoyed by all who found their way down to the Hythe on Saturday November 8th. The best guy prize went to George Pearson who was able to watch as his handiwork went up in smoke as the Bonfire was lit.
Many enjoyed refreshments prepared and served By Wendy Cole, Helen Parr and Jill Stearn who were hoping against hope that it would not rain as they had no shelter this year.
Glenn Newman and Ron Dunnett were in charge of the fireworks and gave us a splendid show. Glenn had earlier in the year undergone a training day at Kimbolton Fireworks so we had even more confidence than ever in our team this year.
Thanks are due to all the above mentioned and also to Browns of Burwell and David S. Smith for their kind donations to our finances.
We are also grateful to Joyce Harrison for her sustained time on the gate and to those acting as stewards.
We did more than cover our expenses and as the aim of the evening is to provide an enjoyable event and not to make a profit, we may consider buying more fireworks in 1998 as it was noticeable that we got less for our money this year.
One cause for anxiety was the hugeness of the bonfire and we are very grateful to Malcolm Mead for his help in making it safe by removing some of the contributions. It was not at all fair that he should suffer a puncture in the course of this good deed and we are very sorry this was so.
Our next village event is the Carol Evening on Wednesday December 17th. CSD Brass will accompany us again and their will be mince pies and mulled wine. We begin at 7.00pm.    Hope to see you all there.
