At the same Petty Sessions, Alfred Whitmore of Reach was summoned under the County Council Bye-law for using abusive language on the highway at Reach on September 10th - John Johnson of Reach said there was a dispute about two sheaves corn that were missing and the defendant called him "A ------ thief" - The Chairman said the Bench did not consider the offence was a breach of the bye-laws. It was slander. The case would be dismissed. Complainant was greatly surprised to find he was to pay costs of 7s 6d.
