Albert Johnson 1920 - 2000

Albert was born in the village at Delph Cottage, he was the second child to Kate and Albert Johnson. He had two sisters Marjorie and Ada. His father farmed in the village, and Albert continued to work on the farm after he left school.

He attended Reach primary school until he was eleven and then Burwell Secondary School.

During the war years he was an active member of the Home Guard. I have listened to many stories of his escapades during this time.

He married Gwen in 1953, and lived at Meadow View, although they never had children of their own, young people were always made welcome. They moved to Snake Hall Farm, and remained there until Albert retired in 1989. Albert and Gwen spent many happy years back at Meadow View looking after George their horse, and various cats. Gwen died in 1996, she was sadly missed by Albert and by all her family and friends.

Albert was a member of the Burwell Agri. Discussion Society, and enjoyed helping at the Burwell Ploughing Match. He was interested in all aspects of farming, but his real love was heavy horses. He enjoyed visiting any event that featured heavy horses.

For many years he was a member of the Swaffham Internal Drainage Board.

Albert was active within the village, a member of the Village Hall Committee for many years. He served on the Parish Council for over 20 years, most of that time as Chairman.

He spent many hours cutting the village green, and helping wherever he could to keep the village running. He was also instrumental in helping to set up the original `Out of Reach'.

He retired from the Parish Council about 5 years ago and spent his time on his garden, looking after his cats, and telling stories to the many visitors who called. He always had a story, it may have been about the village, a place he had visited, or someone he had met at a market, but his gentle humorous way of telling the story kept you interested.

Albert will be missed by many, his jovial face, his helping hand, his sense of fun. and his wry smile, all go to make Albert the character he was!

We will miss you Albert, a big thank you from the community.

God Bless.
