Another two months have passed and the summer is upon us, so for you who are off on your hols don’t forget to let your neighbours know, and ask them to make your house lived in. Unscrupulous people are around and even Reach does not get let off the hook with seven crimes in Reach since the end of April, these include motor vehicle theft, damage to and tampering with cars, burglaries from dwellings, people, and even one crime of violence. Please be vigilant.

Please be aware of the bus changes on page 14, some buses now only go to Soham, and some of the times and routes have changed in the evenings. Sundays have also changed with buses not going where you expect them to. Of course this is still subject to the busses coming through Reach, or if they do taking a short cut through the green. Good luck!

Congratulations to Juliete Vickery on her victory in the ladies (and almost the men's) Reach marathon which set her up for the European Triathlon championships in Hungary the next weekend. She won gold in her age group (admitting to 35-40) and came second female overall. The race was 5 pm on Sunday! same time as the marathon the week before but the race involved 1.5 m swim 40 km bike and 10 km run and it was in 30C so I expect a tad more painful. She is looking out for sponsorship for the World championships in Cancun Mexico in November so if you can sponsor please contact her.

Well done the Pub and the village, the money has been raised for the War Memorial restoration and hopefully work will get under way soon. Once spick and span let’s hope we can keep it like that. A seat has been installed up by the wood for the dog walkers to rest, and it has been agreed to put a seat in the cemetery as well, for one to sit and contemplate.

Whilst out the other evening taking a photograph of the Peahen on Charles Moseley’s roof, (Front Cover). I was approached by a young lady who was upset that the Carnival Queen for Burwell does not allow Reachites to enter, I was asked can we have one, well a Reach Fair Queen sounds alright to me, let’s have a volunteer to organise this for next year.

I have added children’s birthday’s in this issue even of those I have no details of, but this is the last time. I had returned SIX families birthdays. I can see the next issue running with a very small page of birthdays, but if that is what you want then I can go along with that. In fact this could also be the last crossword as I again received no entries. See how it goes this time.

One last point and I said I would give it a mention horse boxes breaking down in the middle of the Swaffham Road do not help traffic leaving or entering the village so next time could you please push it off the road to let our busses pass if they decide to come. I expect the busses will avoid us completely if this happens again!

I will be back writing in September (15th) after the Reach Beer festival please give it your support and have a good weekend, and if you are going on holiday have a great time.

Dave

Reach War Memorial – a big thank-you

As you may have seen in The Dyke’s End the fund raising for the refurbishment of the Reach War Memorial has reached its target. We can now proceed and hope to have the work completed before November 11th this year.

Our main thanks go to Phil Vincent, landlord of The Dyke’s End, for initiating the project. Phil not only started us off but also continued throughout the past year to encourage donations to the fund, through quizzes and other events held in the pub.

The Parish Council is also very pleased to announce that because of the interest shown in the project we have managed to get the War Memorial listed by the Secretary of State as a Grade II listed monument. English Heritage say the memorial is of particular interest, not only because it forms part of a conservation area but also as it lists the fallen in The Great War. The listing should ensure that the memorial remains in good condition to enhance the centre of our village.

Penny Lang, Clerk to Reach Parish Council
