August / September 1999

I have been back to England twice, the last visit being 1997. I have visited Reach; it has changed very little, it was like stepping back in time!

We had lunch in the village pub, wonderful! I look forward to having lunch there again next year, and perhaps staying for a few days. I hope the pub is up and running by then!

Keep up the good work. If anyone would like to email me, I would be happy to hear from him or her.

I enclose a poem, I hope you will consider it for publication in your magazine.

Yours Sincerely

Jackie Herron.

How it was.
Knees sinking
in cold black earth,
small fingers
singling sugar beet.
I contemplate-
the long straight row
where field and sky in distance meet.
Rain starts falling,
chill wind blows, showers turn to sleet.
But I will not stop
until I'm there,
Where field and sky will meet.
Two shillings a row,
I think of that.
How many rows this week?
I'll have enough,
for the village fair
When field and sky do meet.
Evening reaches down,
shadows fall-
knees weary, cold feet,
nimble fingers
suddenly stop!
Sheer joy,
The field and sky do meet!

Jackie
