Letters

I have only lived in the village for a little over 2 years but have found it a very welcoming and friendly place.

I am therefore sorry to raise the vexed question of parking in the village again but just recently I was subjected to a display of aggressive behaviour from a resident. I had parked on the road running down the side of the Green and was not obstructing anyone's entrance or driveway. I was told I had no right to park there and that if I didn't move my car at once, he would box it in so I wouldn't be able to get out at all.

In the spring edition of Out of Reach, following another acrimonious incident, the Parish Council set out the definitive position on parking in the village:-

"The Parish Council would like to confirm that as long as the vehicle is not causing an obstruction and is pointing in the direction of the traffic there is nothing unlawful about parking on the public highway"

How ironic then that the abusive neighbour was in fact a Parish Councillor.

Dear Editor

I am sorry to have to disagree with someone whose friendship I value but I do not share Doreen's regrets about the amount the church made at the Fair. And I write as a member of the Reach Village Centre Committee and the Church Committee. I feel that Fair Day is for the village. The Fair Committee work hard to draw people to Reach on that day and I would like to see the church going in wholeheartedly with the village to raise funds for our community. But I would also like the village in general (and that means everyone) to think about the church. A handful attend weekly but many come for baptisms, funerals and the occasional wedding. Some, I know, also pop in during the week for a time of peace and quiet on their own. The running of the church depends on a very few, generally getting on in years. It is a struggle and I personally don't see much hope for the future as things are. I'd like village folk to spend a few minutes thinking what if anything the church means to them. If you decide you don't want it to go the way of private residence that threatened the pub (not that this is on the cards just now, but could happen ), please can you give us some support, financial or practical. We need help with cleaning, upkeep, doing the flowers and garden and at the moment we need to raise funds to re-order the entrance to provide a more dignified entry especially for funerals. One opportunity to offer support will be on Saturday, 14th October at St Etheldreda's Fair and Gift Day. I know many do help from time to time and we are always grateful for that and for the good support we get for our social events.
