Stray Dogs

WHAT IS A STRAY

A dog is classed as a stray if found on a highway or public place of resort.

If you allow your dog to stray you could end up with more than a chat with the Council's Dog Warden

If a stray dog is reported to the Council the dog warden will look for it

Once she finds the animal she will check to see if it has identification

If it has identification the dog warden will return it to the owner if they are at home and give advice on the consequences of allowing a dog to stray

If the owner is not at home then the dog will have its photo taken for identification purposes and then it will be taken to Wood Green Animal Shelter at Godmanchester

Details of the dog will be kept at the Council offices and by the police.

WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO

Once you find your dog has gone "walk about", contact the Council offices on 01353 665555 or the Police station on 01223 358966 (ask for Ely Police)

If your dog has been picked up you will need to come to the Council Offices to identify your dog. You will need to bring:

proof of your address

means of paying for the release of your dog

Proof of benefits received (if applicable) 50% reduction in fees for state pensioners on income support or benefit

Before the release papers are issued you will need to pay the following costs:

£25 fine

£6.49 daily kennelling fee

Once you have settled your bill you will be given a release form which needs to be taken to Wood Green Animal Shelter within 24 hours

Your dog will only be released when you produce the paper work showing that you have paid the Council for the costs of detaining the animal.

WHAT HAPPENS AT WEEKENDS

If your dog is picked up on a Friday and the dog warden has been unable to return your dog to you, it will be taken to Wood Green animal shelter. The Police Station will be notified of the dogs held at Wood Green

You will NOT be able to collect your dog until the Council. offices open on Monday morning
