Reach Sports Club

I apologise for the late arrival of this summary of the Rounders matches which took place on 1st September.

Despite an unpromising looking day and the threat of rain over 20 people of varying ages arrived on the playing field for the fourth annual rounders match.  Although this was fewer than other years as many were still away on summer holidays those who did come were eager for an afternoon’s sport.

In the age old tradition two captain’s were chosen (Amy and Kelly Folkes) and the teams picked one by one from the players, thus ensuring a spread of abilities and ages in each team.

The Hill family provided a ball and play could start with Amy’s team scoring 3 well deserved rounders not all of which were scored by adults.  Half-time arrived with Kelly’s team on 3  ½ rounders when they managed to split the ball.  The Hills duly provided another ball.

The second innings opened in a more free scoring manner and when this new ball also succumbed to the hard hitting of Amy’s team they had scored a further 9 rounders, leaving Kelly’s team to score 8 ½ to draw.  A task that looked impossible as they quickly lost one or two key batters.  With some suspect refereeing decisions and plainly inept fielding the two teams were level with only 5 seconds to spare on the clock.

The Captains then batted for the honour of winning.  3 balls each to see who could score the a rounder or reach the furthest post.  Kelly was shocked when Amy scored a rounder on her third ball, but not as much as Amy when Kelly equalled her feat.  In the second set Kelly was not up to the task again and so Amy’s team won by one rounder.

Those who came enjoyed a lively afternoon and a good game played in a friendly atmosphere of competition and barbeque smoke for which everyone was grateful to Gerald and Karen Turner.  I hope more people will be able to come in 2003.

 AGM

The recent AGM was a complete non-event as only one person turned up.

Is everyone that uninterested in the future of the Sports Club in Reach ?

During March next year we shall hold a meeting to discuss the Sports Day and September Rounders.  I hope some of the younger parents in the village will be able to attend in order to carry on these Reach traditions.

The exact date will be in the next magazine.
