Sports in Reach

Although at one time large enough to support at least two football teams as well as two cricket teams plus a ladies cricket team, the change in employment in the village and its surroundings meant there were fewer people around to take part in regular sporting events and even now the majority play their sport outside the village.

In their place we now have several annual events which have become part of the way of life of the village. Sports Day was started as an event to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and has been held annually ever since. Traditionally held on the village green and comprising seven races (including egg-and-spoon, sack, apple bobbing, wheel-barrow as well as a sprint) for all ages from pre-school through to 16 years old and open events for the men and ladies of the village, this afternoon has become a highlight of the summer in Reach. The afternoon tea for all the family including jelly and ice-cream in the Village Hall and is as noisy as any school dinner. The afternoon is finished with a marathon – once held around the village and fields but now limited to several laps of the green. Every year the Jon Robinson cup is awarded to the best athlete in the village.

After a long drawn out process the village was able to buy a field from Cambridgeshire County Council with some help from grants and we now have a Playing field within the village. This field was named after Steven Folkes, a local young villager and sportsman who was killed in a road accident. The opening was marked by a village rounders tournament and barbeque which has now developed into an annual event.
