Dear Editor, Is it too simple to argue that everyone has to live their lives according to their own histories and personal truths? If the message of the church does not seem relevant to that personal history, and if the answers that the church gives do not seem to tackle adequately the questions asked, then we have to try to find our own answers, according to our own past and ongoing experiences. That quest is as important for the individual who rejects the church, as having a Christian faith must be for the individual who accepts it. Yours sincerely, Claire Acklam |
Dear Editor, The Church of England What a breath of fresh air Philip Lewis' letter was (Out of Reach Dec 2000). I have great respect for the church. I am sure it is a power for good in our land, well meaning in every thing it does, bit it fails to engage me. It's liturgy is still rooted in Victorian England. It seems to sit on the fence on so many issues or to embrace every point of view failing to give a moral lead in case it offends. How about trying a few of Philip's ideas just to see what the response is. Yours sincerely, Anthony Lloyd |
8 January 2001 1201 Charter On behalf of all the City Council representatives who had the great pleasure to visit Reach this morning, my sincere gratitude for the wonderful welcome and generous hospitality extended to us. It was such a lovely occasion and it was obvious to me that lots of planning had gone into making the event such a success. Please do thank everyone concerned for so enthusiastically supporting this morning's ceremony. So many people, I know, contributed towards the event's success, but I wonder if I may mention particularly Penny Lang whom I know has been of great help to my staff and Joyce Harrison for her excellent catering skills: It was lovely too to see so many residents of the village there today. It being a working day, I really didn't expect such a reception! The plaque looks really splendid and will, as you say, be a great focal point when the Proclamation of the Fair takes place in future years. I am delighted to have a copy of the Reach book and know I shall enjoy reading it. With my appreciation to you - and I look forward to returning to the village again on 7th May. Yours sincerely Evelyn Knowles Mayor |
