District Council Notes (April/May 1999)

You will be wondering what has happened to the local elections in Reach. The answer is that you did not have any, because I was the only person nominated for the District Council and there were only enough nominations for each of the places on the Parish Council. I shall therefore continue to serve as your District Councillor for the next four years. I am pleased to be continuing as your Councillor, as I have enjoyed working with so many of you over the last year, but I am sorry that you were not given a chance to vote for your Councillor.

The results of the local elections in the rest of the District on May 6th have brought important changes in the way that the District Council is run. The 20 Liberal Democrat Councillors have a majority, so the new Liberal Democrat Group now controls East Cambridgeshire District Council. As I have been elected as the Liberal Democrat Group Leader, I am the Leader of the Council. At the Annual Meeting on 18th May we elected Sheila Friend-Smith (Ely) as Chairman for the coming year and Valerie Leake (Bottisham) as Vice-Chairman.

Full Council at the end of March decided to restore a bus pass for all Pensioners. I am delighted by this, because I know that last year's cut by the County Council caused great difficulty for pensioners living in Reach and other villages. Now that we have more frequent services as well people should have much more opportunity to get to the shops and to visit friends and relatives. All we need to do now is improve the reliability of the buses and find ways to bring down the cost for all of us.

The next sale of compost bins and water butts at bargain prices will be held at the old David Smith Site on Reach Road, Burwell between 10am and 3pm on Sunday June 13th. We have pushed hard to persuade the Councils to hold these sales at more convenient venues so if you haven’t already got one - come along and get composting!

My next Councillor’s Surgery is on Tuesday 15th June at Reach Village Hall between 7.30pm and 9.00pm. Please come if you wish to discuss any matters with me. Or, if you prefer you can contact me at home.
