DO YOU HAVE A BED TO SPARE? COULD YOU GIVE A CARER A BREAK?
Full-time carers often need a regular short break to recharge their batteries and have some time to themselves. Caring for someone who has a learning disability can be a particularly stressful job. Equally, people who are cared for also benefit from having a change to their normal routine. This is where the Link Scheme comes in. We are looking for people who have a spare room and who are willing to take in an adult with a learning disability for a short time whilst their own carer has a break. Could one of these people be you? If yes, then you would offer the person a "home from home", perhaps just overnight, or for a weekend, or for several nights. We will give you plenty of support and training so that you in turn can give the best possible support to the cared-for persons. You will of course receive payment for the time and commitment you give. We have Link Scheme Coordinators who are there to advise and help you. The coordinators also ensure compatibility between the Link Carer and the person to be cared for. They will organise introductory visits so that everyone feels comfortable with the arrangements and will then help with planning the actual stays. Existing carers have said that their participation in the scheme has been a very rewarding experience and one which makes a real and positive difference to people's lives - including their own.
